JUNEAU-EXCURSION INLET-GLACIER
BAY NATIONAL
PARK-ELFIN COVE-SWANSON
HARBOR:
Day 1: Leave Juneau
at 8:00 am. Fruit and muffins provided for a continental breakfast. Cruise to
Icy Straits while viewing whales, bears, otters, eagles and more. Pick up
some Dungeness Crab in Swanson
Harbor that same
morning and cook them up fresh onboard and start snacking!! We can troll
out of Swanson
Harbor for King
Salmon or Cohos if they are running. We will then journey to Excursion
Inlet, site of a WWII POW camp, now operating as a fish processing plant.
Stroll along the dirt runway where small planes bring in the mail and
groceries to the seasonal summer workers…black bears like to inhabit
the runway area. Visit the new historic museum with fascinating memorabilia
and newspapers from the German POW days and past cannery activities. From
there, we will cruise to the end of Excursion Inlet for our evening
anchorage in a secluded cove often filled with brown bears, moose,
porpoise, and birds of all kinds. A hearty hot evening meal will be served.
Fish for Dolly Varden trout when available.
Day 2: After a hot breakfast, we will cruise and enter Glacier Bay National Park with our exclusive
10-year private permit, awarded to only 15 charter operators statewide.
Glacier Bay is a natural resource brimming with glaciers, glacial ice
tidepools, spectacular scenery and wildlife. Our first stop is Park
Headquarters, Bartlett
Cove. Visit the Lodge
Interpretive Center, walk the beautiful 1 Mile
Rainforest Trail, identify the many wildflowers in bloom, stroll the beach
for shells. Back onboard, we will cruise a short distance across the inlet
and jig the rest of the afternoon for halibut with our exclusive 6-pole
sport charter halibut permit (required starting 2011). Spend the night in a
secluded cove in the Park. After dinner, keep your eyes open for bears on
the beach, and other wildlife.
Day 3: Journey to the Glaciers: Marjorie, Lamplugh, and Reid. Eat
a hot breakfast and watch the abundance of wildlife during the day, from
bears to whales. Marjorie Glacier moves 6-8 feet per day and the calving
activity is spectacular! We will anchor in Reid Inlet near the glacier and
zodiac to shore where you can walk along the beach at the base of the
glacier. Awesome photography opportunities await you this entire day. We
will return to Berg
Bay for our evening
anchorage. Hot lunch and dinner onboard.
Day 4: We will leave Berg Bay and cross Icy Straits heading west
towards the ocean to the community of Elfin Cove, a tiny fishing village
with NO ROADS and NO CARS. Elfin Cove is like stepping back in time, only
accessible by float plane of private boat. Explore this magical village,
walking on the Boardwalk and taking in the sights.
Day 5: After breakfast we will say goodbye to Elfin Cove and head
to Swanson Harbor. We will cruise to Point
Adolphus, home to dozens of returning summer Humpback Whales that put on a
spectacular show just for you! You will have plenty of opportunity to
photograph the humpback whales while they play, spout and breach, right in
front of your eyes. A couple hours later, we will arrive at Swanson Harbor. We will spend our last night
in this secluded anchorage where you can explore the nearby island, abundant
with shells and wildflowers.
Day 6: Rise and shine about 6 a.m. to cruise our way back to Juneau. Breakfast is
served en route. We will deliver you to the airport with your boxed fish
for your afternoon flight, or to your hotel if you plan to spend additional
time in Juneau.
ADD ONE MORE DAY:
Add another day and you can do more activities whether it’s
another full day of fishing for salmon and bottom fish, or exploring Glacier Bay, or journeying to Pelican, another
fishing village near the ocean. We can also opt to go into Dundas Bay,
part of Glacier Bay
National Park, with
its abundance of bears, berries, an old cannery site, and good halibut
jigging!
